St Mark’s Phonics and Reading Schemes

At St Mark’s there is a rigorous programme of phonics teaching across the school.  We use the following materials: Jolly Phonics, Phonics Play, Letters and Sounds, as well as a new  'Support for Spelling' book developed in line with the new curriculum by the Teaching School.

For reading we have a wonderful range of books which have been banded across the school by the school library service and the key schemes are: Project X, the Oxford Reading Tree and Rigby Star.

The Curriculum at St Mark’s

Our Early Years children follow a separate curriculum which provides them with concrete experiences some adult initiated but others initiated by the children themselves. Our Early years area provides an ideal environment for outside learning with a super new classroom area.

We are always delighted to talk to parents/carers  and prospective parents/carers about our school curriculum and they can find out more information in the following ways: through the school open days; in our prospectus; at the pre-school transition meetings; at the annual phonics, English, maths and e-safety workshops for all classes; through the policies on our school website; at workshops for specific curriculum areas where new developments are explained; at our annual ‘education speed dating’ event that outlines new developments, curriculum changes and other functions of the school;  as well as one-to-one enquiries which will be responded to by the head or class teachers. We strongly believe in a broad and balanced curriculum with learning stimulated through exciting and engaging learning journeys that give the opportunity for children to use, amongst other subjects, their English and maths skills in meaningful and purposeful contexts.

Please find all our detailed Curriculum information under 'Policies and reports'.
