Welcome to Cocoons' Class 2019 Term 1/2

It's Christmas!! Cocoons have had some Christmas fun already with Christmas lunch, class party, christmas hat making and competition, and a visit from Father Christmas! I am very proud and grateful for all their generosity with our reverse advent calendar too. Each day, instead of opening a chocolate or a door on the calendar, the children have pulled out two names from the class and they have brought in some food items for the local food bank. Thank you for all your donations and have a wonderful Christmas!

Cocoons performed their danceathon dance for the NSPCC four times this week and I made them do it one more time so that I could put it on the website! I hope you enjoy it. They worked really hard.
Science - November
The children have been learning about sound and how it travels. They made string telephones to experiment with in the playground and noticed that the sound was louder and clearer when the string was tight because the vibrations were able to travel faster through the straight, solid particles.
Forest School - November
Linking to our geography topic, the children have been exploring the temperate forest biome first-hand at SMILE Meadow. They learnt about the layers of the forest, why deciduous trees shed their leaves in autumn and which leaves belonged to which trees. They also had fun listening to and drawing the sounds of the forest, making leaf bunting to decorate our new shelter, bug hunting and building dens!
Remembrance Day
Alongside our termly value, Peace, the children have looked at the poem, In Flanders Fields by John McCrae. To accompany this, they found out facts about Remembrance day (including learning about the different coloured poppies) and created some collaborative poppy artwork which is on display outside our classroom.
We were lucky enough today, to have a visit from a cartographer to conclude our learning about maps. He took us through how to make a map from a photo to the finished product and also showed some online digital mapping that he had been working on that very day! We had a tour around a 3D London!
For our final rugby session of the term, we played a few more competitive games, kicked off by some pretty scary "Haka" performances!
Community Tea
I am so proud of all of the children after yeserday's Community Tea. They were full of energy, passion and enthusiasm about their learning and they communicated this with such confidence to all our visitors. Thank you so much to all those who came to support the children, and to those were unable to come but support them in many other ways on a daily basis. Your support was evident yesterday! Science
This week in science, the children have set up an experiment (or should that be eggsperiment!?) to test the effects of different liquids on the enamel of teeth. No, we didn't pull out any teeth! We have used eggs instead because egg shell is made up from calcium compounds, similar to the enamel on our teeth! We thought about how to keep it a fair test, making sure we had controlled variables like time, temperature and amount of liquid.

Screen Printing - Tuesday 1st October
The Cocoons have been very busy (and slightly messy!) learning how to screen print their paper cutting designs. We are going to try to add a second colour next week!
We have been learning how to hold a rugby ball correctly and pass a rugby ball backwards whilst travelling forwards.
Year 3 have been practising their place value skills by playing some reverse Jenga! They had to take turns to add Dienes in ones, tens or hundreds to try to calculate to 1000 without knocking it down. They recalculated the amount made each turn.
We are learning about whether animals are herbivores, carnivores or omnivores. Click the link below to investigate some animals and read about their diet to find out which category they are. How might this affect their teeth? What sort of teeth might they have?

In science, Cocoons' children have been learning about teeth. They have learnt the names of the different types of teeth and their functions. They had a go at ordering the teeth in some playdough gums!
The children studied the paper cuttings of the fairy tale author, Hans Christian Andersen and noted their features, both in terms of style and technique, and their links to fairy tales. They then compared these to the paper cuttings of Henri Matisse.
