Sewing
Update (Friday 12th July)
We have all finished our sea creatures. They look fantastic! We can't wait to get them up on display. New photos have been added below...
Update (Wednesday 3rd July)...
We have started applying our sewing skills to making our ocean creatures. More photos have been added...take a look!
Today Cocoons have been practising sewing. We are on our way to mastering the running stitch and some of us are having a really good go at back stitch too!
Over the last few weeks we have had a few transition days when Year 2 have joined Year 3 in Cocoons' Classroom to get to know their way around the classroom and how things work in their new class. In the first session we read a poem called, Ten Things Found in a Wizard's Pocket by Ian McMillan and wrote our own versions for a fairy tale character. After that, we worked out some things about Mrs Pridmore using our maths skills and then made our own maths problems for Mrs Pridmore to work out so she could find out about us! On our last afternoon, we coloured our lego characters that would be used in class next year to represent us and enjoyed the sun playing some water games.
A hive of activity
Cocoons had a very special visitor today! A very kind parent (and governor) came in to talk to us about bees as we have been learning about these in science, linking to our Plants topic. We dressed up in bee-keeper outfits, watched bloopers of bees returning to the hive with pollen on their legs, watched a bee growing in fast-motion, examined a hive and the cells within it where the honey is made and most importantly, we tasted some fresh honey!! We learnt so much we were buzzing!!
Thank you Mr Cook!
22nd June 2019
Cocoons will be having a spelling dictation on Monday! We are revising homophones (and near homophones) from Year 2, 3 and 4. These are words that sound the same but are spelt differently. Please support your child with knowing how to use the following words correctly: there, they're, their, too, to, for, four, write, right, our, are, peace, piece, quite, quiet, whole, hole, through, threw, meat, meet, knight, night, ate, eight, wheel, we'll, which, witch, wood, would, read, red, blue, blew.
Spelling Frame has many homophone practice rules - https://spellingframe.co.uk/ in Year 2 and Year 3/4
Thank you. Mrs P :-)
We have been studying Flotsam by David Wiesner and have produced some fantastic writing as tour guides. We will now be using Padlet to collaborate on senences for our last piece of work on this book: a narrative.
Welcome back Cocoons!
I hope you have all had a lovely half-term.
Take a look at our learning journey below for Term 5 and 6. We are learning about respecting our environment with a focus on the rainforests and oceans of the world.
5th June - Science - States of Matter
We learnt about the states of matter today (solids and liquids) and had lots of fun investigating different materials and using our understanding of the properties of each state to determine if it was a solid or a liquid. We made particles to show the states of matter and played an outdoor game where WE had to represent the particles for each state!
We also wrote some riddles. Can you guess what the material is?
"I am a liquid material which children like when it's hot outside. I am kept in a cup, jug or carton to stop me from spilling. I'm fluid and my particles aren't held together as much as solids due to weaker bonds. What am I?" by Molly/Barnaby
"I am solid but I am a bit wobbly a bit like a liquid. I am a solid because I keep my shape."
What am I? by Charlie/William
"It sounds like a liquid when shaken in a closed container. This is white and keeps its shape. It is a wobbly solid matter. What is it?" by Emmie/Max
"I am a solid because I keep my shape. I can melt when heated. I can get moulded into balls by force because I am a solid. What am I?" by Oliver/Summer
Rainforest Art
Last term Cocoons worked really hard on creating mixed-media rainforest animal collages which they are hugely proud of and rightly so! Some of them are up in our reception area if you would like to come and look at them! They are large so they don't all fit but the other wonderful works of art will go up on the landing by Cocoons Classroom!
Science
In science we have been investigating plants and their role in the ecosystem.
We learnt about the way plants in the rainforest have adapted to their environment and brought balance.
We also acted out how water is transported through plants and dissected a rhododendron.
The children were keen to find out whether seeds and plants could survive without air, light or water so they carried out an experiment with bean plants.
Bees play such a key role in nature. After researching all about them on the internet, the children used Padlet (an online collaborative document) to add their facts so that everyone could have access to them. They then used these facts to create posters persuading people to 'save the bees'. They are up around the school.
Geography
As part of their learning about the rainforest, Cocoons have learnt about the impact farming oil palm trees for palm oil, has on the biodiversity of the ecosystem. Palm oil is in over 50% of products in our supermarkets and after finding out the damage it is doing to the rainforests, Cocoons wanted to do something about it. They decided to write to our school lunch provide to persuade them to stop using palm oil in their school meals. The company have responded and are currently looking into what can be done to source palm oil free products!
Well done Cocoons!
Watch the Greenpeace video about palm oil below:

We researched which of the products we used at home and at school contain palm oil via a supermarket website. Some of our favourite things contain it! Have a look for yourself at our display in the reception area...You can search YOUR favourite products too.
We used books such as The Lorax, The Great Kapok Tree and Running Wild to find out about deforestation and its effects. We uploaded our thoughts onto Padlet (an online collaborative document) to share with others in the class.
We also watched an episode of Our Planet - David Attenborough - which inspired us enormously!
See the trailer below:

We have been researching and learning about the rainforest. We have learnt the meanings of the words 'biodiversity' and 'ecosystem'. We created our own ecosystem web as we listened to a story about different food chains in the rainforest.
We have learnt about how plants adapt to the rainforest environment and climate.
Watch the video about the Bromeliad plant
To link to both science and our rainforest topic we will be learning about the importance of bees for our planet.
Watch the video we will be watching in class...
The classroom became a labyrinth and the children had to match the text from the myth to the pictures! They had string to follow, just like Theseus and they sequenced the story to find the Minotaur!
In science we have been investigating light. The children looked at how light reflects and the way it travels.
We have also been investigating shadows: how they are made, what you need to make one and the types of materials that make the best shadows.
Thursday 13th December
We had a special visitor in Cocoons today. Rumena kindly brought in tasty Indian samosas for the children to try (which led to requests for her to be our school chef!!)
She also painted beautiful henna tattoos on our hands (all freehand!) which were the envy of the rest of the school.
After this, we performed the Bollywood dance we had been learning in P.E for Rumena to say thank you!
We then had an arty afternoon, drawing Indian animals.
It really was a fantastic way to finish off our learning journey to India!
W/C 17th September
Thank you for coming to the parent workshop! Really great to see so many of you there. Links to the websites or handouts are on the home learning page...
Our trip to SMILE Meadow was a success! All the children collaborated really well in their groups, choosing their spot in which to create their artwork based on the natural structures they wanted (or didn't want!) to be part of their work. Many of them thought carefully about the design, colour, texture and tone of their work and modified it as they progressed.
Andy Goldsworthy inspired art
W/C 10th September
With our Harvest Celebration creeping up on us, we took a chance to link our topic to the assembly and spent some time on a colour walk, capturing the beauty of the colours in our school environment. After photographing some inspiration, we wrote colour poems in partners using our 5 senses. We hope many of you will enjoy listening to snippets of them during the Harvest assembly.
We spent another enjoyable afternoon in the outdoors having learnt about the artist, Andy Goldsworthy. We gathered natural items from the grounds of the churchyard and playground and created our first attempts at 'Land Art'.
5th September
Cocoons had a lovely start to the year, taking inspiration from our topic book, 'Where My Wellies Take Me'. We donned appropriate clothing/footwear and headed down to the woods past SMILE Meadow where we collected blackberries. After the initial temptation to scoff them them all on the journey back, we managed to save some which we put into a blackberry and apple crumble. A fantastic and delicious way to start the new school year! We also used our 5 senses to think about the physical and human markers of our journey, creating journey sticks as reminders of some of the things we had found.
Welcome back Cocoons
This term our topic is Journeys.
We will be focusing on local journeys for the first half of term, exploring our beautiful village and all it has to offer. We will use the book 'Where My Wellies Take Me' by Claire and Michael Morpurgo as inspiration.
Our learning journey can be found below.
